The Vincent House
Since 1942!
For over 50 years this was a home filled
with love, laughter, great food, good friends and wonderful memories
for the family
of
James Birney Vincent & his wife
Filomena “Mamie” (nee DeMaio-Mongiello) Vincent
and their 9 children
Ted, Angie, Charlotte, Margaret, Don,
Richard, Victor, Sharron and James
In 1942 arriving in “tent city” Henderson with their oldest son, Ted Daskas, Vince (a World War I veteran originally from Weyauwega, Wisconsin) left San Bernardino, California, leaving wife, Mamie and their other six children, to find work at the BMI plants. It was during World War II and jobs, gas and food were hard to come by.
Vince found a home (now the Chapel) and Mamie and their other six children, Angie, Charlotte, Margaret, Don, Richard & Victor, joined Vince and Ted. In 1943 their daughter, Sharron, was born at the St. Rose De Lima Hospital in Henderson and in 1946 their ninth and last child, James, joined the lively Vincent household.
After running his own roofing, fencing and construction businesses, and raising and feeding a large family, Vince unexpectedly passed away in June 1957 at the young age of 58 years. He was buried with military honors in Las Vegas as Henderson did not have a cemetery.
Mamie, a young widow at 53 years of age, raised her 4 children still at home. She continued to live, work, volunteer and be an active member in the Catholic Church, Salvation Army, War Mothers, Royal Neighbors of America, Henderson Boys and Girls Club and local politics. She was still working as a Foster Grandmother when she was in her eighties.
Several members of the family were married in the home and all enjoyed family celebrations and activities until 1994, when Mamie was reunited with her husband Vince when she passed away at over 90 years of age. Her eulogy was given by longtime family friends; the late Governor of Nevada, Mike O’Callaghan and by our United States Senator from Nevada (D) Harry Reid.
The children had their father moved from Las Vegas and their parents were buried “together at last” at the Palm Mortuary in Henderson, Nevada.
All 9 children and their extended families attended Henderson and area schools and were and are, very active and prominent in school athletics, activities and government. Most of them still, live, work and contribute their talents to the community in all areas including: medicine, law, law enforcement, real estate, arts & entertainment, gaming, insurance, education, construction, politics, and various businesses.
Wanting to memorialize their home as a “happy” place, the Chapel was created and opened in July 2004. It is owned and operated by members of the Vincent family.
